Learn how Nest Protect and Nest Learning Thermostat work together

Nest products work together to improve your safety and comfort. Nest Protect helps the Nest Learning Thermostat know when you’re away and when you’re back, so it can turn down your heating or cooling while you’re gone.

The Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect communicate with one another to help protect your home and keep you comfortable. If your Nest products are in the same home and paired to the same account, Nest will connect them automatically.

Improving Auto-Away

Nest Protect helps improve the Auto-Away and Auto Arrival features of your Nest Learning Thermostat. In some homes, the thermostat is placed in a low-traffic area, which makes it difficult to detect if you’re away. For example, if you’re working from your home office but your thermostat is in the hallway, it may think you’re gone for the day.

If you have Nest Protect (Wired 120V), it will detect your presence just like your Nest Learning Thermostat would if it were in the room. By knowing when you’re home or away, the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect can save you money while keeping you comfortable.

Nest Protect (Battery) updates less frequently than Nest Protect (Wired 120V) to conserve battery life. Even though it doesn’t update right away, it can still improve the quality of your schedule over time by up to 50%.

Heating Shut-Off

The Nest Learning Thermostat can automatically shut off fossil-fuel based heating if Nest Protect detects a carbon monoxide alarm. Broken or leaky heating systems are a common source of carbon monoxide. Turning it off during a carbon monoxide emergency could stop your furnace from making the situation even worse.
