About the Nest Energy Report
The Nest Energy Report is an email sent out by Nest summarizing last month’s heating and cooling usage and providing tips on how to save more energy.
The Nest Energy Report summarizes last month’s heating and cooling usage for each Nest Learning Thermostat in your Nest Account. If you have multiple Nest Thermostats in one location, we’ll add together all your data into one Energy Report. If you have Nest Thermostats in more than one location, you will receive separate Energy Reports per location.
When will I get my Nest Energy Report?
Energy Reports are sent out around the first week of every month.
Your first Energy Report will be incomplete, covering only the days of that month that your new Nest Learning Thermostat was installed. If you installed on May 10th, for example, your first energy report will arrive the first week of June and will cover May 10th through the end of the month. Your June Energy Report will be your first full report and will arrive around the first week of July.
Why didn’t I get my Energy Report?
Your Nest Thermostat needs to be connected to Wi-Fi and a Nest Account in order to receive an Energy Report.
You won’t receive the Energy Report if you’ve opted out of product emails from Nest. You can verify your email settings in the Account section of the Nest Web or Mobile apps (Account > Emails from Nest > Contact me about my Nest usage).

Why are some sections of my Nest Energy Report missing?
If we didn’t get data from every day of the month, we may not be able to give you an accurate estimate of your energy use. In these cases, we may make our best guess, or if we can’t do that, we simply won’t include sections of your report that we don’t have enough data for.
There are also sections of the report where we give you a total for the month - like your total Nest Leaf count. If you haven’t earned any Nest Leafs in a month, then we won’t show you that section.
How to read your Nest Energy Report
The big picture
At the top of your Energy Report we show you an estimate of how many kilowatt hours all Nest Thermostats in the US and Canada have saved. We assume that Nest Thermostat owners did not have schedules, then calculate how much they saved with their schedule. We look at everything we know: how well a home keeps heat, what kind of heating/cooling usage patterns they have, how often people go into Away, etc to calculate this number.
The amount of green house gas emitted per kilowatt-hour depends on fuel type and can be measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. We made several assumptions relating to fuel sources and region-specific emissions in our calculations:
Once we arrived at metric tons of CO2e, we applied a US EPA statistic approximating 1.22 metric tons of CO2 sequestered annually by one acre of average US forestry (source).
You may or may not also see a Kudos box at the top of your report. You’ll most often receive a Kudos if you have done something more efficiently than you’ve done in the past, or if you’re doing much better than other Nesters. For example, you may earn a Kudo by adjusting your schedule so that it saves more month-to-month.
You will also be informed at the top of the Energy Report if we haven’t gotten a full month of data from your thermostat. If that’s the case, we’ll make our best guess at how many hours of heating/cooling you used and show as much of the Energy Report as possible.
If you have had your Nest Thermostat for more than one month, we’ll do a quick comparison of this past month vs the previous one. This simply allows you to see if your system has been on more or less hours this month.
If you’ve only had your Nest Thermostat for one month, then you’ll only see the heating/cooling information for that month.
Hours of cooling are blue, hours of heating are red. If all of your devices are missing all of last month's data, you will see a broken bar displayed for the previous month and no usage numbers.
Why did your energy use change?
Here we show you why you used more/fewer hours of heating or cooling this month. Nest looks at several reasons why your energy use could have changed: the weather, your schedule changes, you temperature adjustments, Auto-Away and manual Away, Airwave, turning your Nest Thermostat off, adding a new Nest Learning Thermostat, the number of days in a month, etc.
In this section, we highlight the ones that made the biggest impact on your energy use. We will show from one to three factors here.
Underneath each icon, you’ll see how this factor affected how many hours of energy you used. You’ll also see a brief explanation of the change.
Here we offer a tip to help you save more energy. We do our research for this part of the Energy Report, taking what we know about you, your home, the weather in your area and how much energy your neighbors are using.
This section will change every month and contains a fact that we think you’ll find interesting. Often it will give you information about how you’re doing compared to your state, province or the country as a whole.
A look at your Leafs
This section tells you how many Nest Leafs you’ve received this month. If you’ve received more Leafs than a majority of Nesters, this information will also be displayed.
This section will feature Nest blog posts. They may include news about the company, information about Nest features, information about Nest customers or whatever else it is we’re blogging about that month.
