How the Home Report accounts for changes in your energy use

Weather

As the weather changes, you naturally use more or less heating or cooling, even
if you don’t adjust your thermostat.

With the same schedule, a Nest thermostat might never turn the heating on in spring,
but it might turn on for 12 hours a day to keep you warm during winter.

Schedule

Changes to your schedule may cause your energy use to change compared to
the previous month. If your energy use is higher or lower because of a change to
your schedule, you might see this reason listed in your Home Report.

Note: Your schedule can change if you add or remove a setpoint, or if your Nest
thermostat automatically learns a new setpoint using Auto-Schedule.

Manual adjustments

It’s considered a 'manual adjustment' whenever you change the temperature using
your thermostat or the Nest app. The Home Report compares the manual
adjustments that you made last month to the ones you made this month.

Eco Temperature

If you change your thermostat to Eco Temperature, it may cause your energy use to
change from the previous month.

Tip: Choosing energy efficient Eco Temperature can help you to save energy.

Home and Away

Your thermostat can automatically switch to Eco Temperature to help save energy while nobody's at home.

Off

If your Nest thermostat is off, it won’t heat or cool your home unless your 
safety temperature is reached. If you’ve saved energy this month by turning
your thermostat off, you’ll see this reason in your Home Report.

Added a Nest thermostat

If you add another Nest thermostat to your home, you’ll see twice the energy
information. This extra energy information might make it look like your energy use
has gone up. This icon will appear so you know that you haven’t necessarily used
more energy, just that your thermostats notice more of it.

Calendar days

Each month doesn't have the same number of days. Between January (31 days)
and February (28 days), you can heat your home for the same number of hours each
day, but you will still end up using less energy in February than January.
