Learn more about the Nest app
You can control and get information on all your Nest products with the Nest app or on the Web if you have a computer or supported smartphone or tablet and an Internet connection.
From the first days of Nest, there was no question that our products would be controlled or accessed remotely by laptop, smartphone and tablet. If we create all this technology and provide you data about your home, we want to make sure you can access it where and when you want.
We created the Nest Account and Nest app to give you greater control over your Nest products and deeper access to what Nest learns about your home, schedule and energy use. Both the Nest Account and Nest app are free.
In order to get started using the Nest app or accessing your Nest products on the Web, you will need:
- A free Nest Account. If you don't have one yet, create one now. All you need is an email address.
- At least one Nest Learning Thermostat and/or Nest Protect.
- A Wi-Fi access point for your Nest products to connect to the Internet.
How do I get a Nest Account?
Creating a Nest Account is super easy. Your Nest Account allows you to securely access and control your Nest products from the Nest app or from the Web. All you need is a valid email address. You’ll be able to create your Nest Account from the login screen.
How many homes and Nest products can I manage with my Nest Account?
10 thermostats total divided between 2 homes.
18 per home.
What is the Nest app?
The Nest app gives you full access to all of your Nest products from anyplace with an Internet connection. You’ll be able to change the current target temperature or view your energy usage on your Nest Thermostat, view the latest status and adjust the settings on your Nest Protect, and much more. All from one app.
To use the Nest app, you’ll need:
- A supported mobile device with Internet access:
- iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with iOS 6.0 or later.
- Android smartphone or tablet with Android 2.2 ("Froyo") or later.
You also have full access to your Nest products on the Web. You can log in to your Nest Account on nest.com and have the same access and control over your Nest products as you do on the Nest app.
The only difference is that the Nest app is required for the initial setup of Nest Protect.
To log in to your Nest Account on the Web, you’ll need:
- An Internet connected computer running one of the following web browsers:
Visit nest.com and click Control Your Nest at the top of the page to log in or create an account.
What are Nest Messages?
When you log into your Nest Account, on the Nest app or on the Web, you’ll get messages about your Nest products. It might be a message from your Nest Thermostat reminding you that it’s time to change your heating and cooling system’s air filter. Or it could be a message from Nest Protect telling you that its battery is getting low.
You can manage your messages from the Nest app or the Web. As an example, messages deleted from the Nest app will be removed the next time you log into your account on the Web.
If a message is important or requires your attention, a message will also trigger a mobile notification on your smartphone or tablet wherever the Nest app is installed.
Some examples of messages that would also receive a push notification to your smartphone or tablet include:
- If your Nest Protect has detected smoke or carbon monoxide.
- If your Nest Learning Thermostat has adjusted your current target temperature because of a Rush Hour Rewards event.
