How do I switch between heating and cooling?
Since your temperature preferences on a freezing winter day will be different than when it’s scorching--and since your heating equipment and cooling equipment work differently--the Nest Learning Thermostat learns schedules for heating and cooling separately. Here’s how to switch between them.
Every time you heat your home, Nest will use the heating schedule it’s learned from your heating preferences. Every time you cool your home, Nest will use the cooling schedule it’s learned from your cooling preferences. When you change the temperature in heating or cooling mode, Nest's respective heating or cooling schedule will learn the change.
If you have both heating and cooling, you can select the mode setting (the orange and blue dots) and switch between HEAT, COOL, HEAT • COOL. You can also switch between heating and cooling remotely with the Nest apps. Feel free to switch between heating and cooling as often as needed for your comfort.
The first time you switch--for example from heating to cooling in the spring--Nest’s schedule will be blank. That’s because Nest hasn’t yet learned about your cooling system and preferences. For the first few days that Nest cools your home, it will learn just as it did when you first installed it. Time to Temperature and the Nest Leaf will also need to be relearned for a new system and new preferences. They’ll return after about a week.
Once Nest has experienced one heating and one cooling season in your home, it will have learned what you like for each season. The next time a new season rolls around, Nest will be ready to heat and cool your home as you like.
To create a schedule with both heating and cooling setpoints, use HEAT • COOL. For more information, see the link below:
